The Rotary Club of Truro, in conjunction with the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, held the inaugural Think You Can Drive (TYCD) day at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, in April 2007. TYCD is aimed at educating drivers and other road users about the consequences of dangerous driving with the goal of saving at least one life on Cornish roads.

The day was an outstanding success, with displays by prominent dealerships such as Vospers and Nissan, local car clubs including the Jaguar Enthusiast Club and Kernow Cruz, plus experiences such as an F1 Simulator and a skidpan, and simulated crash rescues by the emergency services to name but some of the activities. Valuable bridges were built between police traffic officers and the young drivers during the course of the day. Over forty drivers signed up for formal skid control training.

The third Think You Can Drive (TYCD) day is to be held at the same venue on July 19th 2009, with an increased level of promotion and activities on the day. At this early stage the Rotary Club of Truro is inviting companies to reserve an element of their 2009 sponsorship budget to help sponsor this valuable and vital day.

TYCD provides an excellent opportunity for marketing your company, (either through passive sponsorship or by means of a trade stand). This year our target group (young drivers) has been expanded to include “born again” bikers (who contribute disproportionately to accident and injury statistics) and young pedestrians. You will appreciate we will attract a wide demographic of all ages and backgrounds and will therefore be able to provide various opportunities for publicity to our sponsors

Atlantic Radio provided coverage of the launch both on the day and with a series of interviews beforehand and will be providing extensive coverage of this year’s event. BBC spotlight has expressed an interest in producing a thirty minute documentary on the subject of the impact of dangerous driving with TYCD as its focal point.

TYCD as an event has been recognised by other counties as an opportunity to address an important issue on Britain’s roads and we have been approached by Rotary Clubs in other counties wishing to run a TYCD event. We will aim to give those organisations who join us in these early years of development the first opportunity to continue to support the event both in other areas of the country and in future years.

We will be in a position to offer you more detailed information on the available opportunities over the coming months and if we have inspired your interest enough and you are interested in setting aside an element of your sponsorship budget please don’t hesitate to contact us or alternatively fill out the sponsorship form. Proceeds from the event will be distributed to the Air Ambulance, FLEET (for families of road workers killed or injured at work) and the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

If you are interested in making a charitable donation towards the proceeds of the event please see the Charitable donations section.
