What is Think You Can Drive?
In 2006 Nigel Hudson of Truro Rotary Club was inspired by his passion for cars and driving to try and do something about the level of young fatalities on Cornish roads.
With the backing of Truro Rotary Club Nigel obtained further support from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, the Fire Brigade and Cornwall County Council.
All were agreed that the level of collisions on Cornish roads were at an unacceptable level…..
…..and so an aim of saving one young life through an interactive driving experience on the consequences of dangerous driving was born.
It quickly became evident that dangerous driving was an issue of importance to people across Cornwall and the interest became so great that the educational experience became an event with multiple participants across various backgrounds.
At this time it was realised that greater man power was required to handle the amount of interest generated and so Cornwall Centre for Volunteers were approached.
On the 14th March 2007 the event went ahead at the Royal Cornwall Showground and proved a great success.
The event not only raised awareness of the consequences of dangerous driving but there was a marked reduction in the number of fatalities on Cornish roads in the summer of 2007 following the event.
Along with this incredible success came the fact that we had raised £1500 for charity on the day.
The success of TYCD 2007 has led to much interest from other areas of the country wishing to hold Think You Can Drive events of their own. The possibility of TYCD becoming a national driving event has led to the formation of a committee to handle the increased volume of interest in TYCD 2008.
TYCD 2007 taught us that our original demographic of educating younger drivers needed expanding to include people of all ages with people as young as 10 taking pre-assessment driving lessons with the British School of Motoring and those as old as 65 taking part on the skidpan.
This year’s event promises to be an incredible experience for all the family so make sure to be there at what’s shaping up to be the driving event of the year.
